RECOGNIZING SECONDARY INFECTION.
Not eating or taking fluid.
Not moving around, or talking/making bird noises.
Sleeping most of the time.
Hot to touch on body and beak area.
Recognizing the symptoms and getting
antibiotics early is very important.
Pneumonia: Normally at the end, recognizable
by a mucousy discharge from the mouth.

The disease has taken a grip on Manau.
She has lost many more feathers.
Her head and facial area are now bald,
all that remains is stubble.
She succumbed to a secondary infection,
caused by the disease.
She has been very unwell, at one stage
I thought we were going to lose her.
We were given Baytril to combat the infection,
this seems to have worked but she has taken another
step backwards in her general health,
I feel she will not recover to her previous mobility
and general well being.
The disease is taking it's toll.
No longer can she negotiate the ladder to the sopha,
this has also now been taken away and
towels placed under her perch on the floor of her cage.
She no longer ventures to the front of her cage
and resists attempts to take her out of it.
JANUARY 8th 2007
Beak and nail trims are now at a fortnightly
basis, so quickly do they grow.
The beak having split in half over 8 weeks
ago now, has not improved.
Her top mandible rests at an angle to the bottom.
Like a pair of scissors that have lost the middle screw holding them in place.
DECEMBER '06
The easiest way here is plenty of pictures with descriptions.
Shortly after diagnosis.
On the morning she passed away.
Sadly in the evening of January 19th 2007 she lost the battle.
She died peacefully in my arms, her head on my shoulder while I was comforting her.
I still cry now at the loss of My Little Angel, something innoncent, loving and so generous in her trust and faith in me a human being.
Bless you Little M, always loved and missed terribly.
In desperate need of
a trim but too sick for the trauma of one.
Blood is very common on her, either from a reopened sore or another quill snapped.
Stemming the flow can be frightening, use a clean
cloth and apply pressure,
release, if the bleeding has stopped, apply betadine.
Manau was never able to balance properly,
nor was she very strong as in her physical strength.
Appearance of new feathers, note the deformed quill.
Side view of beak deviation. *Note.. the scissor appearance.
